Descriptive Writing Lesson 1

I enjoy descriptive writing, because this is the point at which a writer becomes a painter; presenting the world to his/her readers in words. I love painting too, so that’s the reason for it being my favorite writing skill.

I will be making a series of lessons on Writing Descriptively, this is lesson 1.

There are several skills involved in writing descriptively, these are as follows: naming what you want to describe, selecting and including sensory details, using comparison and using various descriptive techniques.
In this lesson, we will focus on the first skill; naming what is to be described.
You need to ask yourself if it is a place or person or thing, or idea, or item or is it an event that you want to describe. This is important, because there are different ways of describing different things, because you focus on detail in a different way.

It also involves making choices about things that speak to the writer, who plans on recreating this item/person/place/event with words. So what you do here is very important. Also involved in the naming of objects is making a list of adjectives you wish to attach to this object/place/item/person/event. So description can be fun to write.

For example, suppose I decided to write about my front door, these are some of the words that come to mind: brown, rectangle, old, wooden, rough etc

Tip 1: A great way to prepare for this stage of the descriptive process is to look around you and choose something you like that you see and begin to explore it. Ask yourself, if you were to write about it, what would you say? How do you feel about this thing?

Tip 2: Play the game ‘I Spy’ describe the thing you see, it’s a fun way to begin the process. These activities help you to become more conscious about your environment, and that’s the beginning.

Lesson 1 will end here, but you will have lesson two soon. In lesson two we will go onto the second skill: creating/using sensory details.

Never Give Up!

Life can be a chore. Sometimes it gets exciting, and you get hopeful. But sometimes it crashes, like a torpedo taking a dive, and you feel like, well, crap. These ups and downs of life are really based on our feelings. Feelings change everyday, many times. To determine that your life is a failure or success based on your feelings is therefore unreliable and dangerous. Why? We go through so many things everyday. Some things are bad and some things are good. If every time you feel bad about something, you become hopeless and sink into despair, you are putting your whole life at risk, over a moment in time. And conversely, if you have something great going on now and you feel good and make decisions on how you feel, even though you might be happy now, those decisions might make you unhappy later. Never make decisions on your feelings. I know this now, because I have made the mistakes and I have gotten so low in my feelings that I have actually attempted suicide more than once. Don...
A Thought Having a great idea, is like seeing a light in the darkness. It's just like walking out into a beautifully lit moonlight night and beholding heaven in a glance. Good ideas make us feel excited and they can come from anywhere around us: from the water running down your body in the shower, from the sound of your friend laughing at something you are not quite sure of, from the smile of your child, from the sweet taste of fresh ripe fruit or even from utter chaos. But never stop looking for good ideas. If you should want to write something and get writer's block, just take the time to observe your surroundings. Examine it with an open mind. Inhale and exhale, take note of the sounds, smells, textures and all that is happening around you. Behold the story of life unfolding before you and your idea is somewhere there waiting for you to discover it. And the explorer in you will find it, soon enough. Enjoy....
